Very interesting artilcle on the effects of social networking by Clive Thompson in the Sept. 7, 2008 Sunday New York Times Magazine. The article describes how services like Twitter and Facebook facilitate "ambient awareness" about a large group of people — far larger than we could maintain by direct real-world interaction. While the number of our close friends may not change, the number of "weak ties" can get huge. The article also talks about the positive and negative effects. Well worth reading.
Hey, I should probably post a note note about this on my Facebook page!
